Herald Scotland

Herald - Bogdan Ciocoiu - Credentials

We specialise in front-end development, user experience enhancement, and accessibility. Operating from Birmingham, we collaborated with Herald Scotland, focusing on bug fixes and resolving compatibility issues across various browsers and devices. Our remit was to ensure a seamless experience for readers and enhance accessibility and user interaction on the platform.

User experience

Herald Scotland’s website needed consistent functionality across different browsers and screen sizes. We identified and resolved multiple front-end compatibility issues, ensuring the site performs optimally on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. This process involved rigorous cross-browser testing and refining CSS and JavaScript code to provide a cohesive experience, regardless of the user’s device or browser.

JQuery

To make the website more accessible, we integrated several JQuery plugins designed to support accessibility standards. These tools ensure that all users, including those with disabilities, can navigate and engage effectively with the site’s content.

  1. We used jQuery Accessible Tabs to make tabbed content more navigable for screen readers. This feature allows users to access different site sections without complex interactions, helping users with visual impairments easily switch between articles and sections.
  2. ARIA Modal helped us create accessible modals for pop-up features such as login windows or subscription prompts. It also ensures keyboard navigation works seamlessly within modals, guiding users through actions without requiring a mouse.
  3. We implemented Focus Visible to enhance keyboard navigation for users relying on keyboard input. This plugin makes the focus state visible when users navigate via the keyboard, helping them quickly locate their position on the page.
  4. By integrating jQuery Skip To, we provided skip links to essential sections of the page, such as primary content and navigation. This plugin enables keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repetitive content, improving the overall navigation experience.

Bug fixes

Our bug fixes targeted specific areas that impacted user experience, including image loading issues, layout inconsistencies, and broken links. Additionally, we optimised JavaScript and CSS for faster load times, reducing latency and enhancing site responsiveness. These improvements made the site more engaging, encouraging users to explore Herald Scotland’s content seamlessly.

Our front-end work for Herald Scotland resulted in a responsive, accessible website that meets modern web standards. Through targeted bug fixes, compatibility improvements, and accessibility enhancements, we provided a user-friendly experience for all readers. This project highlights our commitment to delivering high-quality front-end solutions that enhance usability and accessibility, ensuring a positive experience for a diverse audience.
